Yendarra’s dream garden will soon be a reality
We are in the process of creating something magical and special at Yendarra School – a garden, orchard and kitchen that will serve our community for many years to come.
Our idea germinated a few years ago. At first we simply wanted to give our students the chance to grow their own food, then cook it. But then we realised we could do even better. Now we have plans for an amazing vegetable and orchard landscape that will bring beauty to the school environment and inspire a love of nature.
We’ve been working with a professional landscape artist who’s very good at listening to our dreams. There will be lots of fruit trees – many different varieties, because we want to expose our students to a whole world of fruit. There will also be nut trees, because nuts are protein-rich and great for our health. And there will be a magnificent vegetable garden, which will be planted and tended by our students.
The finished result will look like a collection of adjoining outdoor rooms, furnished with fruit and vegetables. There will be lots of seating, so that students and teachers can spend time enjoying the peace, tranquillity and delicious scents of nature.
Our school community can look forward to feijoas, avocados, blueberries and guavas; macadamias, walnuts, pecans and hazelnuts; broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, tomatoes and every other vegetable that grows well under the Auckland sun.
Alongside our beautiful orchard and garden will be a fully-equipped kitchen (once a classroom) designed specifically for teaching students and their families about food preparation and cooking. It will have room for up to 30 participants and an outdoor deck eating area (alfresco). We hope to enlist talented parents, cultural cooks and celebrity chefs to show us how it’s done. The project is self-funded, however we are seeking sponsors to assist with equipment and supplies.
At Yendarra School we believe that food is love, so growing our own and learning how to cook it is a natural step forward. We expect this project to get off the ground before the end of 2016.
